Apple's New iPhone Calculator is Missing the Most Important Button

Apple's New iPhone Calculator is Missing the Most Important Button

I'm also happy the iPad finally got its own Calculator app, but I do have one bone to pick with Apple. My guess is many of you felt the same way the first time you tried using your iPhone's calculator after updating to iOS 18. What happened to the "C" (Clear) button? Why did Apple remove it? We've been using calculators the same way forever. Why change now?

While the Calculator retains the "AC" or All Clear button, it changes to a backspace button after typing in any number or function key. Now, if you make a mistake typing in an entry, like 12345, the Calculator functions like a typical keyboard. This allows you to more precisely correct an error without clearing and retyping the entire number. Is this reinvention of the wheel superior? I think so! But I'm still bothered by it.

The new Calculator is not without its redeeming qualities. It's pretty awesome. The Calculator continuously displays your operation until you hit the (=) sign, so you don't have to memorize each sequence to know your results are accurate. It's logical. Where's that update been all these years?

Next, if you tap the calculator icon in the bottom left, you can choose between Basic and Scientific modes or perform conversions. If you toggle on the Convert icon, your Calculator's screen will display a USD to Euro converter. Tap either "USD" or "EUR," and you'll be prompted with several other conversion options, including currency, length, speed, temperature, and time. Again, this is an awesome new feature.

Okay, the iPhone Calculator app has changed for the better, but I still miss the "C" button. This simple change shows Apple's overall power. With over 150 million active iPhones in the US, Apple can change how we've done things for decades, like using a rudimentary calculator.

In this example, it's something innocuous. As Apple Intelligence is nearly upon us, more disruption in the way we communicate with others and interact with our devices is sure to follow. If these changes don't feel right for you, take things slow. They may grow on you, or they may not.
