IOWA CITY -- Senior Nate Heise gave the Cyclones their first lead of the game and guard Curtis Jones provided the finishing blows.
No. 3 Iowa State beat Iowa 89-80 Thursday night in Carver-Hawkeye Stadium. It was Iowa State's first win on Iowa's home court since 2014.
Iowa (7-3) built a 28-17 lead in the first half courtesy of a hot-shooting start. The Hawkeyes began the game 10-of-13 from the field and 6-of-7 from 3-point range.

Iowa's lead peaked at 13 points, a 39-26 lead, when sophomore forward Ladji Dembele made a midrange jumper with 4:22 remaining in the first half. Dembele provided a lift off the bench scoring 11 points.

The offensive fireworks were uncharacteristic against Iowa State's (8-1) defense, which ranks No. 6 nationally in KenPom's independent defensive efficiency ratings. ISU entered the game allowing 64.8 points per game, No. 42 in the NCAA.
Sophomore forward Owen Freeman scored 10 first-half points to lead Iowa. Freeman finished with a team-high 16 points.

Iowa State cut into the Hawkeyes' lead with deep three-pointers from Jones and forward Josh Jefferson, trimming Iowa's halftime lead to 44-37. Three-pointers from Dembele and Payton Sandfort early in the second half helped sustain a small lead throughout most of the second half.
After Iowa State tied the game three times in the second half, Heise, a senior guard, gave ISU a 76-74 lead with 3:05 remaining. He cut to the basket and laid in a bounce pass from Josh Jackson.
Jones provided the finishing blows, extending the lead to four with a falling right-handed layup and a 3-pointer with 1:40 remaining to push ISU's lead to 81-76.
Iowa State hadn't won in Iowa City since 2014, when Cyclones Monte Morris, Abdel Nader and Georges Niang contributed to a 90-75 victory.
