Extension hosts fifth annual 4-H Open House at WCREEC in North Platte

The fifth 4-H Open House for the Nebraska 4-H month was Thursday at the West Central Research, Extension and Education Center in North Platte.

30 families braved the wintry weather and attended the event that opened its doors from 4-7 p.m. Thursday.

"The come and go" 4-H club event displayed different projects and was open to the public.

Caitlyn Jacobson, the 4-H youth development Extension educator, said the open house event gives them a chance to tell the community what the club is about and enroll new members.

"The children can make a bird feeder and coloring sheets, we are hoping to have families involved and educate the community about what the club offers," Jacobson added.

The 4-H program offers more than 200 different projects including robotics, livestock, judging and various displays, including chicken.

The 4-H program is one of the largest out-of-school organizations and so it is a way for youth to find success beyond the classroom. It is open to ages 5 to 18.

"It teaches the youth real time life skills," she said.

Andrew Lott, a sixth-grader at Madison Middle School, said he has been a member for six years. He added that he loves displaying his chicken and doing sports.

Zach Walker said he brought his son, daughter, and niece to see what the club has for summer and sign them up for the 4-H camp.

Kris Walker, an alumni of the club, said she accompanied her grandchildren to learn about the 4-H club.

"I love the way the club helps children to commit to a project and complete it," she said.

Being around other children and working with adults that give their time to them is something I treasure about the club, she added.

"It is just too much fun, I just want to make my own things," Josie Walker a 7-year-old said.

Jessica Wilson, the Canyon Run 4-H Club leader, said the 4-H members do several projects through the year and take immense pride in serving the community.

They display livestock projects like beef cattle, goats, horses, and others enjoy cooking, Wilson said.

"We appreciate the folks who were able to come out and brave the cold weather," she added.

Mike Eskelson, a 4-H volunteer, teaches children robotics and coding, noting that it helps them to be creative.

He displayed his project a "First Lego League" worldwide competition that teaches children time management, building skills and teamwork.

Lego catches the imagination of children and building robotics helps them to be creative, he added.

Alexis Buoy, a fifth grader at Lake Maloney Elementary School, joined 4-H three years ago and started showing goats.

"What interests me is agriculture and we also learn cooking, photography and many other different options you can work with," she added.

Julie Buoy, Alexis's mother, said her family are all involved in 4-H.

"My husband and I are both alumni of the club, my son joined when he was six and my daughter started at five years old," she said.

"They learn how to take care of the animals, community service, independence and keep them busy-as well as out of trouble," she added.
