A Des Moines man accused of kicking a food delivery driver in the leg was rescued from a river after running away from police on Tuesday night.
A 31-year-old food delivery driver called the Des Moines Police Department after he allegedly was assaulted in the 300 block of West Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway while making a delivery at around 9:45 p.m Tuesday, according to a news release from Sgt. Paul Parizek, spokesperson for the Des Moines Police Department.
The victim reported being kicked in the leg and received a minor injury, Parizek said. There was no known motive as to why the suspect kicked the delivery driver.
The 32-year-old suspect ran from police as they arrived at the scene, the news release said. Officers followed the suspect before he walked into the Des Moines River near Market and Water streets.
Officers attempted to talk to suspect as he stood in the river. Members of the Des Moines Fire Department Water Emergency Team were able to approach the suspect and assist him out of the river after 30 minutes.
The suspect was treated for cold exposure at a local hospital and released to the Police Department's custody, the news release said.
The suspect is facing charges of assault causing injury and interference with official acts, according to the news release. The suspect also had unrelated drug-offense warrants during the time of his arrest.
