Rece Davis Reveals The 'Only' Choice For Interim Head Coach At Florida

ESPN college football analyst Rece Davis recently weighed in on the current state of the Florida Gators, given their head coaching struggles and 1-2 start to the season.

Davis explained that Billy Napier likely won't "figure it out" with the Gators in his third season as the head coach. He doesn't think Florida should fire Napier, but he has a plan for the Gators if they choose to do so.

"Let Billy finish the season and then do what you need to do, but if you go down the interim road, there's only one choice," Davis said." He's sitting right there, to my knowledge, a resident now, perhaps, of the great state of Florida. He will come from his palatial surroundings in the greater Destin area and get on I-10 and drive in there, smash about 12 Red Bulls, hit the can on his forehead. And the (Ed Orgeron) era will have started in Gainesville."

While he added that he doesn't believe in interim head coaches at the collegiate level, Davis explained that Orgeron is the "only choice" for the Gators, if they were to go down that road.

"I'm not advocating for interim coaches," Davis added. "I think, generally speaking, you're not really doing anybody much of a service by it. You play out the season and you move on."

Orgeron last worked as the head coach of the LSU Tigers in 2021. He led Joe Burrow and the Tigers to the national title in 2019 and has extensive coaching experience at the collegiate level.

Prior to his time with the Tigers, Orgeron was the interim head coach and defensive coordinator at USC from 2010-13 and an associate head coach with the Tennessee Volunteers in 2009.

He's been known for his football character and elite defensive schemes, which has led to success on the football field. While Orgeron may not be the long-term answer for the Gators, Davis believes he could fill in for Napier.

The start of the season hasn't been ideal for Florida, grabbing just one win against Samford, and it won't get easier.

UF will play multiple ranked teams later on this year, including Georgia, Tennessee, Texas, Ole Miss, and LSU.
