LeBron James' NBA Free Agency Decision 'Surprised' Rival Executives, per Report

NBA superstar LeBron James is now technically a free agent, however, that doesn't mean the 20-time All-Star is preparing to leave Los Angeles this offseason.

James, who recently opted out of his $51.4 million contract for the 2024-25 season, is reportedly open to taking a pay cut next year to assist the Lakers in building a more competitive roster.

According to Yahoo! Sports' Jake Fischer, James' apparent willingness to take less salary 'surprised' rival executives around the NBA.

"Word of LeBron James being open to less salary, after James opted out of his $51.4 million for the 2024-25 season to become a free agent, took many rival executives by surprise over the weekend," Fischer reported Sunday.

The current consensus among NBA circles is that LeBron's pay cut - should he take one at all - will likely depend on the talent Los Angeles acquires this offseason via free agency and trades.

James, for reference, is eligible to receive a maximum three-year, $162 million deal from the Lakers this summer.

ESPN's Dave McMenamin reported Saturday that LeBron would be willing to take a pay cut for players such as Klay Thompson, James Harden and Jonas Valanciunas.
