Orwashers Bakery going all out for Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur

Orwashers Bakery kicks into high gear for the upcoming Jewish holidays. The Manhattan landmark, est. 1916, opened a Roslyn Heights location last year, offering Jewish-inflected standards (seeded rye bread, babka and rugelach), classic New York desserts (Charlotte Russe and old-fashioned layer cakes) and old-world artisanal breads.

Options for Rosh Hashanah (which begins at sunset Oct. 2) and Yom Kippur (Oct. 11) include apple-honey cake ($20), round challahs (traditional, $12, or Valrhona chocolate chip or raisin, $13), chocolate or cinnamon babka ($16), marble or seven-layer cake ($13), mini black-and-white cookies ($13.50 for six) or rugelach (apricot, chocolate-chip, raspberry or chocolate-raspberry ($27.30 a pound) and matzoh-ball soup ($16/quart).

Orwashers' Sweet New Year gift box features an apple-honey cake, a round challah, chocolate babka and one pound of rugelach for $95. Pre-order for pickup starting Sept. 30 or visit the pop-up tent outside the bakery Oct. 2-3.

Orwashers is also offering a "break-fast" menu for Yom Kippur with smoked fish platters and salads in addition to breads, cakes and sweets (pre-order by Oct. 6).
