Blue Jay soccer team crowned WDA champs, still undefeated

Sep. 24 -- JAMESTOWN -- Last year, the Jamestown High School boys soccer team had to share its WDA title with Bismarck Legacy.

Not this year.

"It is such an amazing feeling," JHS head soccer coach Brandi Harty said. "Last year was great and we had an amazing season but to finally win it outright -- it's such a good feeling. It really is."

The Jays clinched the WDA title Tuesday night, defeating Bismarck Legacy 1-0. With the win, the Jays have improved to 13-0 and have clinched the No. 1 seed out of the West Region heading into the 2024 State Soccer Tournament.

Before the Jays head to Grand Forks to fight for a state title, the team must finish out the regular season. The team's next test is scheduled for Thursday against Bismarck High. The tilt is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. at Jamestown's Rotary Field.

There might be less pressure one Thursday than there was on Tuesday.

Heading into Tuesday, Harty was nervous, but extremely excited.

"We knew it was going to be a fight -- it always is when we play Legacy," Harty said. "One of the things I like about playing Legacy is that they elevate the level of play. That was good for our boys. We needed a game where we had to play a full 80 minutes of really, really tough and intense defending and attacking.

"I was excited to play them," she said. "I was nervous -- but excited."

Legacy kept the pressure on and forced the Blue Jays to play more physical than they have for the better part of the last month.

The Blue Jay defense only allowed four shots on goal while the team's offensive players peppered Legacy's goal with 19 shots. Legacy goalkeeper, Liam Horner, made 18 saves off 19 shots faced. Jamestown's Grant Lunde posted a shutout, corralling the four shots he faced.

One couldn't really blame Horner for the one goal he let go by.

A bullet from Iddi Ramadhani zipped into the back of the net to give the Jays the 1-0 lead in the 31st minute. Carter Genter was credited with the assist.

"It was just a sense of relief because they did work really hard and they did have opportunities," Harty said. "Legacy's goalkeeper -- testament to him -- he's a phenomenal goalkeeper so when we scored we earned it on him."

"I am very happy that we had a game like this and that we finished an 80 minute game," she said. "It wasn't always pretty -- we had to adjust and they did a nice job of adjusting throughout the game."

Goalkeeper saves: Legacy, Liam Horner, 18; Jamestown, Grant Lunde, 4
