October's Supermoon: Photographers Share Incredible Pictures Of The Year's Biggest And Brightest Moon

The world just got to witness this year's biggest and brightest Moon in the night sky. October's full Moon also called the Hunter's Moon appeared on Tuesday and lasted three days, giving stargazers enough time to adore it.

Many pictures of the Moon, which actually was a Supermoon, have been flooded on social media by both professional and amateur photographers.

What is a Supermoon?

The Moon is called a supermoon when it is full and at its closest distance to Earth simultaneously. It takes 27 days for the Moon to complete one orbit around Earth and it passes through the closest (perigee) and farthest (apogee) distance from our planet. NASA says that the Moon is 3.63 lakh km from Earth at perigee and 4 lakh km at apogee.

The varying distances make the Moon appear larger and brighter few times a year. The Moon could be 14 percent bigger and 30 times brighter at perigee. According to NASA, supermoons occur only three to four times a year. This year, we saw supermoons on August 19, September 18 and the final one this year will rise on November 15.

As for October's supermoon, it is also called Hunter's Moon because it coincides with Deer hunting season in the Farmer's Almanac.
