As part of an initiative to support causes that mean the most to its employees, BJ's Wholesale Club awarded $145,000 in grants to six nonprofit organizations in New Jersey.
Altogether, the Massachusetts-based membership-only retail chain gave more than $1 million through its charitable foundation to 70 community groups nationwide that were nominated by team members, according to the company.
From relieving hunger to caring for cancer patients to supporting athletes with disabilities, grant recipients were chosen for their local impact in areas of hunger relief, education and health and wellness. BJ's workers are also actively involved with these organizations through volunteering and fundraising, the company said.
At Burlington Township Food Pantry, the funding will help expand food distribution, allowing it to serve more families in need, BJ's said.
Employees from the retailer's distribution center in Burlington are already well-known at the pantry because they regularly volunteer there, helping restock shelves and prepare food bags.
"I'm proud to work for a company that is deeply committed to giving back," said Scott Schallhorn, e-commerce distribution manager at the distribution center. "It means so much to help local families in need."
Carol Zulla, the pantry's director, expressed gratitude for BJ's support and partnership, saying, "This funding is truly a gift which will make a difference for so many in our community."
In a statement, BJ's Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Bob Eddy said, "BJ's has a proud legacy of supporting the communities where we live and work. Our giving program honors our commitment to giving back and reflects the passion of our team members who care deeply about making a positive difference."
Since its founding in 2004, the company's charitable foundation has awarded over $37 million to nonprofit groups and schools, providing vital support in BJ's communities. Through local and national partnerships, the foundation focuses its efforts on hunger relief, education and health & wellness.
Within New Jersey, BJ's has 24 locations and is preparing to open its 25th early next year in East Hanover.
