A 34-year-old man suspected of driving under the influence of an intoxicant and veering into oncoming traffic, killing another driver, has been taken into custody, authorities announced Thursday.
Deputies from the San Jacinto Sheriff's Station responded near the intersection of State Street and Quandt Road around 4:24 p.m. Monday to reports regarding a severe traffic collision, according to the Riverside County Sheriff's Office.
Sheriff's officials said paramedics arrived at the location to medically assist an unresponsive man, who was later pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators identified the man as 48-year-old Hemet resident Javier Lopez Montes. The other driver was identified as Moreno Valley resident Darell Davis, who sustained severe injuries and was taken to a hospital for treatment.
Deputies determined after conducting a preliminary investigation that Davis' vehicle had veered into oncoming traffic moments before colliding head-on with Montes' vehicle.
Davis was arrested on suspicion of murder. He has a previous arrest for driving under the influence, according to sheriff's officials.
A temporary closure of State Street between Sagecrest Drive and County Lake Drive was issued as deputies conducted an investigation.
Anyone with additional information regarding the collision was urged to call San Jacinto Sheriff's Station Deputy Post at 951-654-2702 or Riverside County sheriff's dispatch at 951-776-1099.
