YNDC helps woman become first-time homeowner at 65

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) - Buying a home can be intimidating and it's not always the easiest process. The Youngstown Neighborhood Development Corporation (YNDC) is making it a lot simpler through its housing counseling program.

Cheryl Kelly, 65, was born and raised in Youngstown and recently purchased her first home with the help of YNDC.

Kelly says she's already got her hands dirty, too, not wasting any time making it feel like home. She put a fresh coat of paint on the sun porch and combined two of the three bedrooms into one spacious master suite.

"Places I've rented, I've felt like a homeowner because I did a lot of work at other people's property. But now, every penny I spent goes into my own," she said. "It is absolutely wonderful to know that what I'm putting in, I'm getting out of. Nobody can take this from me."

The YNDC's program takes aim at breaking down barriers for affordable quality housing, and even helps with repairs and renovations for homeowners who have owned their home for over a year.
