WWE fans have been waiting to hear about the status of the women's tag team championship ever since Jade Cargill was written off TV with an injury angle last month.
General Manager Nick Aldis finally addressed the situation on this week's (Dec. 13) episode of SmackDown. He was prepared to strip Belair and Cargill of the belts when Naomi volunteered to step in as Jade's replacement.
Aldis hesitated at first and said he'll have to run the idea up the flagpole in WWE, but then said he expects Belair and Naomi to be fighting champions. In fact, their first title defense is already scheduled for next week's (Dec. 20) episode of SmackDown against the team of Candice LeRae and WWE Women's Champion Nia Jax.
There are still some strange rumors going around about the exact nature of Cargill's injury. While all of that is being sorted out, it appears WWE is simply handing her tag belt over to Naomi. Did someone check the official rule book to confirm if that's allowed? It's not the first time WWE is replacing one of the women's tag team champions in the middle of a title reign, for what it's worth.
