Jayson Tatum, two others ruled out for Celtics-Pistons matchup

The Celtics ruled out superstar Jayson Tatum for Thursday's matchup with the Detroit Pistons at TD Garden.

Tatum, who leads Boston in points, assists, rebounds and steals per game this season, had been listed as questionable for the game with right patella tendinopathy. It's his second DNP of the season and will give him a full week off between games, as the Celtics do not play again until Saturday at Washington.

In the first game Tatum missed -- also against Detroit last Wednesday -- Sam Hauser filled his spot in Boston's starting lineup. But Hauser also is unavailable Thursday, with the Celtics downgrading him from doubtful as he recovers from a right adductor strain suffered during Saturday's home loss to the Memphis Grizzlies.

Hauser did complete an extensive workout during Thursday's morning shootaround and appeared to be moving well, suggesting his injury is relatively minor.

Before the injury, Hauser turned in two of his best games of the season, totaling 36 points and shooting 50% from 3-point range (9 of 18) in consecutive wins over Detroit and Milwaukee. He also missed three games in October with lower back pain.

The Celtics also ruled out reserve guard Jaden Springer, who was listed as questionable with a non-COVID illness. Springer only has played in blowouts this season, logging 24 minutes over seven appearances.

Forward Jordan Walsh was upgraded to available after being listed as questionable with a left rib contusion. Walsh has seen limited minutes of late -- he requested to play in a G League game this past Sunday for extra playing time -- but could have a larger role Thursday with Tatum and Hauser both sidelined.
