Local DAR chapter recognizes Constitution Week

LEOMINSTER -- Recognizing the anniversary of Constitution Week in September aligns well with National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Capt. John Joslin Jr. chapter's patriotic focus.

Members of the Leominster based chapter recently gathered together along with State Rep. Natalie Higgins to mark the 69th anniversary of the national milestone. According to chapter Regent and Constitution Week Chair Sharon Bouchard, the DAR made its own resolution for Constitution Week, which was adopted on April 21, 1955, followed by passage of the resolution by both houses of congress and President Dwight Eisenhower issuing his own proclamation on August 19th that year.

Constitution Week is celebrated from Sept.17 to 23 each year, a resolution that was adopted on July 23, 1956, and signed into public law on Aug. 2, 1956.

"It is a time to bring awareness to our Constitution, and its principles and values that have shaped our democracy," Bouchard conveyed.

Members of the DAR chapter also stopped by the Leominster Public Library. They donated Constitution themed children's books to the library and contributed to a Constitution Week display in the children's room that featured free materials including flags, pocket constitutions, word searches, and bookmarks.

Bouchard said it's important to them to commemorate Constitution Week, "a priority for the DAR as we emphasize citizen's responsibilities for protecting and defending the Constitution, inform people that the Constitution is the basis for America's great heritage and the foundation for our way of life, and encourage the study of the historical events which led to the framing of the Constitution in September 1787."
