WNBA Legends Sheryl Swoopes, Cynthia Cooper Send Impassioned Plea To Houston Rockets Over "Biggest Travesty" Since Their Retirements

The WNBA Playoffs are set to begin this Sunday with playoff seeds expected to be decided during Thursday night's action on the hardwood.

This year's record-setting WNBA season has become a lightning rod for excitement and controversy, with rookie sensations Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese leading the way.

On Thursday, WNBA legends Sheryl Swoopes and Cynthia Cooper made their thoughts known on some of the league's biggest topics while sending a message to one of the Western Conference's most historically successful franchises about a situation near and dear to their hearts dating back to their playing days.

Swoopes and Cooper secured a permanent place in WNBA history with four straight league titles with the now-defunct Houston Comets from 1997 to 2000.

Both Swoopes and Cooper lamented Houston's missing WNBA team while imploring the Rockets to retire their jerseys in an interview published Thursday.

"I wasn't too happy about (the dissolution of the Comets' WNBA team)," Swoopes said.

"It's really sad to see a team that was so dominant at the beginning of the WNBA winning four straight back-to-back-to-back-to-back championships to know that we don't have a place that we can call home where we played, and a place where we can retire our jerseys.

"So for me, it's a little disappointing that Houston no longer has a team."

The Comets were folded and disbanded during the 'Great Recession' in 2008 when new ownership could not be found.

Cooper also believes that the Rockets should retire the Comets legends' jerseys, calling the current situation the "biggest travesty."

"When you start talking about (Comets legends) Tina Thompson, Hall of Famer, Sheryl Swoopes, Hall of Famer...There is no reason why they should make it to the Hall Of Fame before their jerseys are retired," Cooper said, previously yelling out her name along with Tina Thompson and the phrase 'Hall of Famer'

"There's no reason, and that's the biggest travesty of it all, and I would go ahead to say Rockets, let's go. Let's retire these women's jerseys."

The Swoopes and Cooper message came amid reports than Rockets owner Tilman Fertitta plans to submit a bid to bring an expansion team back to Houston.
