Da Vinci Gala: The East Lynne Theater Company and Cape May Point Science Center hosted their inaugural da Vinci Gala -- A Celebration of Arts and Sciences on Sept. 14, a joint fundraiser that benefited both nonprofits while also honoring Cape May resident and longtime preservationist Christina Clemans.

Held on the lawn of the Science Center in Cape May Point, the event included silent and live auctions, themed cocktails, food by The Chalfonte Hotel, Monarch butterfly tagging and painting demonstrations, a showcase of Les Paul guitars and live music.

"We were thrilled to have had such a glorious and successful inaugural event," East Lynne Board President Susan Tischler said.

McClellan to address Rotary: Assemblyman Antwan McClellan, R-Cape May, Cumberland, Atlantic, will be the guest speaker for the Rotary Club of Ocean City-Upper Township dinner meeting at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the Somers Point Diner, 8 MacArthur Blvd.

McClellan, of Ocean City, was elected to the state Assembly in 2020. He became the deputy Republican leader in January, following his service as the Republican whip from 2022 to 2023. He also is a member of the New Jersey Legislative Black Caucus.

He serves on four Assembly committees: Appropriations; Public Safety and Preparedness; Tourism, Gaming and the Arts; and the Joint Committee on Economic Justice and Equal Employment Opportunity.

Prior to the Assembly, McClellan served on Ocean City Council from 2012-20 and the Ocean City Board of Education from 2010-12.

McClellan graduated from Ocean City High School in 1993, and went on to Virginia State University and Old Dominion. He serves as chief of staff and personnel director in the Cape May County Sheriff's Office.

Final Tales at the Dormer House: The final installment of the Tales at the Dormer House live reading series for 2024 is scheduled for Oct. 10.

Performances will be held at 4 p.m. Thursdays at 800 Columbia Ave. in Cape May on the porch, weather permitting. Otherwise, performances are held in the parlor.

Cost is $12, cash or check at the door, and guests at The Dormer House and children 12 and under are free.

This Thursday, Tom Byrn will read stories by Carolyn Wells, George Ade and Ben Hecht. Michele LaRue will return to the porch Oct. 3 to read Dorothy Canfield Fisher's "The Bedquilt." And on Oct. 10, Phil Pizzi will read the works of Will Rogers.

Classic American Tales' play and story readings will continue throughout the month at the Cape May library and End of the Road Theater.

Hammonton Community Market: The Hammonton Community Market will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday on Horton Street between Bellevue Avenue and Orchard Street. The outdoor pop-up market is organized by Hammonton Green Committee volunteers. The market is free and open to the public and will feature live entertainment by TeVista.

Participating vendors will include local makers, farmers, eco-friendly crafters, artisans and nonprofits. People who use SNAP benefits can purchase eligible items at the market. There also will be a mobile Seed Library with free seeds to share.

American Legion sub sale: The American Legion Auxiliary will hold a sub sale at 11 a.m. Oct. 19 at the post at First Street and Pennsylvania Avenue in Somers Point. Italian subs will be $8 each.

Halloween party fundraiser: The Greater Ocean City Theatre Company will hold a Halloween costume party fundraiser from 7 to 11 p.m. Oct. 25 at The Flanders Hotel at 719 E. 11th St. in Ocean City.

The evening will include a DJ, food, tarot card readings and haunted tales provided by Ghosts by the Coast. Costume prizes will be awarded to the best group, male, female, couple and more. This event is for adults 21 and older.

Tickets are $85 per person until Oct. 1 and $95 thereafter. To purchase tickets, visit oceancitytheatrecompany.com or mail check payable to OCTC to 1501 West Ave., Ocean City, NJ 08226. Deadline to RSVP is Oct. 18. Sponsorship packages are available for a donation of $300, which includes two tickets and special recognition at the event.

Live Your Dream awards: Soroptimist of Cape May County is seeking applicants for its 2024-25 Live Your Dream Education and Training Awards for Women. Three awards will be offered of $2,000 each.

The Live Your Dream awards are given to Cape May County women who provide primary financial support to their children and family and who are enrolled or accepted into a vocational/skills training or undergraduate degree program. Recipients are able to use the awards to offset any costs associated with their efforts to attain higher education such as books, childcare and transportation.

Christmas parade participants sought: The Somers Point Historical Society will host the annual Christmas & Holiday Parade at 6 p.m. Dec. 7. The parade will begin at the Dawes Avenue School and follow Shore Road to City Hall. The historical society is seeking marching groups, floats, decorated trucks, flatbeds, landscape trailers, boats and other vehicles to participate. Prizes will be awarded.
