The background: This is the fourth -- and final -- A/C giveaway event that LADWP has hosted since July. Previous events were held in Watts, Pacoima and Lincoln Heights. The utility has distributed more than 1,000 portable A/C units to low-income, older Angelenos at these events, but demand remains high.

Why it matters: This is the first summer LADWP has hosted such giveaway events. Officials say it's one way the utility is working to respond to increasingly extreme heat waves driven by climate change.

How to get your A/C: The upcoming event will be held from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Oct. 10 at the ONEgeneration Senior Enrichment Center in Reseda. Only LADWP customers over 60 who are enrolled in or qualify for the EZ-SAVE or Lifeline programs are eligible. You'll need to register online, as well as bring an LADWP bill in your name and ID to the event.
