MOREHEAD, Ky. (WKYT) - While many college students go home for the holiday break, some require housing year-round.
Now, a student at Morehead State University said their break housing is locked because of flooding.
"I applied specifically for this building because it's considered break housing which means I could stay over Christmas break," said Alistair McConnaughey, a freshman at MSU.
McConnaughey said his routine has been disrupted by recent flooding at his dorm.
"I can't get to my belongings, I can't do my daily life," he said. "Things are all out of routine."
MSU said that on Saturday, an HVAC system malfunctioned, causing the sprinkler to go off in several areas on three floors. The university said there was water damage in several rooms, and 15 students were relocated temporarily to other campus buildings.
"Not being able to get to your belongings, especially when you're on break, break housing and you kind of need to get to those belongings and then being kind of left without any basic necessities has been rather difficult," said McConnaughey.
However, McConnaughey said he is also worried about those who have gone home for the break, and who may not know about the situation.
"We don't know what's going to happen with their belongings, because they're gone for the next three -- four weeks, but the time they get back we really, sincerely hope there's no mold," he said.
Morehead State University provided WKYT with the following statement:
"On Saturday, December 14, the HVAC system in the recently renovated Craft Tower, formerly Alumni Tower, malfunctioned and caused the sprinkler system to activate in several areas on three floors. This caused water damage to several rooms and fifteen students had to be relocated temporarily. Fortunately, the majority of the rooms impacted are not currently occupied as most students have checked out of the residence halls for the holiday break.
The staff from Office of Student Housing moved swiftly to ensure the students impacted were relocated to another nearby residence hall. MSU facility crews have been working diligently to ensure all impacted rooms are refurbished. All impacted students are expected to be able to return to their room by the end of the day tomorrow. MSU staff will continue to care for the impacted students to ensure their needs are fully met throughout this unfortunate experience."
