MLB magic numbers: Royals, Tigers closing in on clinch (9/26/24)

NEW YORK -- Two American League wild-card spots will come down to the final weekend of the regular season with the Twins desperately trying to make up ground on the Royals and Twins.

A three-team battle for two National League wild-cards won't be settled this weekend because Hurricane Helene postponed the Mets-Braves' games in Atlanta on Wednesday and Thursday nights, forcing a Monday doubleheader.

All of the AL contenders won Wednesday night.

The Royals shut out the Nationals 3-0 in D.C., for their second win in a row after seven consecutive losses. KC remained tied with the Tigers for the second and third wild card. Detroit blew out the visiting Rays 7-1 for its fourth win in a row and eighth in nine games.

The Twins ended a three-game losing streak with an 8-3 win over the Marlins in Minneapolis to stay two games behind the Royals and Tigers.

The Diamondbacks whipping the Giants 8-2 on Wednesday has them tied with the Mets for the second and third spots with the Braves one game behind both.
