Los Alamos Symphony Orchestra To Perform Fall Concert

The Los Alamos Symphony Orchestra presents an evening of symphonic music at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4 at Crossroads Bible Church in Los Alamos.

Tickets are not sold in advance and all are welcome to attend. Admission is free, with a suggested donation of $10. A reception will follow the concert where guests can mingle with the musicians.

The orchestra welcomes its new permanent conductor, William Waag, who also serves as Artistic Director of the Santa Fe Youth Symphony and Music Director of the Santa Fe Community Orchestra.

The program includes works by Beethoven, Amanda Harberg, José Pablo Moncayo, Maurice Ravel and James P. Johnson.

Beethoven's "Egmont Overture", originally composed for Goethe's play Egmont, opens the concert, a piece that remains a staple in classical music. Ravel's "Pavane pour une infante défunte" follows, evoking a young princess performing a stately Spanish dance.

The concert also features "Solis" by contemporary composer Amanda Harberg, a work filled with brilliance and emotional depth. Moncayo's lively "Huapango", based on folk music from Veracruz, brings joyful energy, while Johnson's contributions as a pioneer of jazz are highlighted with a performance of his work "The Harlem Symphony".
