FORMER NASA ASTRONAUT JOSÉ HERNÁNDEZ FREE PUBLIC EVENT -- Kingsport, Tenn. Former NASA astronaut José Hernández will share his inspirational journey from migrant farmworker to space explorer during a visit to Kingsport on Thursday, Sept. 26. Hernández, whose life story was the subject of Amazon Prime's 2023 biopic "A Million Miles Away," will deliver a keynote address at 6 p.m. at the Toy F. Reid Employee Center, 400 S. Wilcox Drive, Kingsport, as part of Eastman's celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15-Oct. 15). FREE 2-DAY HEALTH FAIR -- Healing Hands Health, in collaboration with the ETSU Quillen College of Medicine, is pleased to announce a Free Health Fair scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 26, and Friday, Sept. 27, at 245 Midway Medical Park in Bristol, TN. The two-day Free Health Fair is open to the public! Everyone is welcome whether you have health insurance or not. Attendees will have the opportunity to discuss medical concerns and will have access to a range of care services, such as Mental Health Screenings/Consults, EKGs, and Medical Exams that include blood pressure checks, blood sugar checks, pap smears, prostate exams, and labs. Additionally, Chest X-rays will be offered on Sept. 26, and the Ballad Health Mammogram bus will be onsite on Friday, Sept. 27. To schedule a mammogram appointment please email [email protected]. MENTAL HEALTH CONFERENCE & YOUTH AND FAMILY SUMMIT -- Blacksburg, Va. NAMI Virginia, the Virginia chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, will host its annual Mental Health Conference & Youth and Family Summit on Thursday, Sept. 26, in Blacksburg, Va. This event provides a space for attendees to collaborate with mental health professionals, peers, and family members and learn from one another. TOM TEASLEY & JOHN WUBBENHORST CONCERT -- Master percussionist/multi-instrumentalist Tom Teasley and flutist John Wubbenhorst present a fusion of world music on Friday, Sept. 27, at 7 p.m. at the Jettie Baker Center in Clintwood. The duo utilizes raga (from Sanskrit, meaning "color" or "passion"), one of the ancient traditional melodic patterns in Indian music that provides a framework for improvisation and composition. UT ARBORETUM SOCIETY BUTTERFLY FESTIVAL -- Oak Ridge, Tenn. More than 2,500 are expected to attend the 9th Annual Butterfly Festival hosted by the University of Tennessee Arboretum Society and the UT Forest Resources AgResearch and Education Center on Saturday, Sept. 28, at the UT Arboretum. Gates will open at 9:30 a.m., and festivities will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Butterfly releases will no longer be part of the event, and guests are asked to leave pets and butterfly nets at home. A free pollinator plant will be provided by Tennessee Naturescapes for each family while supplies last, and additional pollinator plants will be available for purchase. Food vendors and craft vendors will be on site. Educational presentations will take place inside the air-conditioned auditorium. Lucas Coe-Starr will speak at 10 a.m. on "Fall Bird Migration in East Tennessee." Stephen Lyn Bales will speak at 10:50 am on "The Mystery of Monarchs." The UT Arboretum will be closed for parking to regular visitors on the day of the Butterfly Festival until 3 p.m. The regular parking lot is closed, and all parking areas will be dedicated to the Butterfly Festival. The entrance fee is $5 in cash (to facilitate entry) per carload. All other expenses can be paid with cash or credit card. JEEPS ON THE LAWN -- The Kingsport Parks and Recreation Department is hosting a Jeeps on the Lawn event at Allandale Mansion from 2-5 p.m. on Sept. 29. The cost to register a Jeep is $10. There is no charge for spectators. Each Jeep registered will be "ducked," and awards will be given for Best In Show and Best Custom Jeep. THE LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS OF VIRGINIA OFFERS 'OFFICE HOURS' FOR VIRGINIANS TO ASK QUESTIONS ABOUT VOTING IN NOVEMBER -- Every Tuesday starting on Sept. 17 (which is also National Voter Registration Day) through Election Day, Nov. 5, the League will staff a zoom meeting from 10-11 a.m. where people can drop by and ask questions on voter registration, casting an in-person or mail-in ballot. We will not answer questions regarding what candidate or party someone should vote for but will refer them to Vote 41 so they can get our nonpartisan information. This will be solely for providing information on how to cast their ballot either in person, or via mail. WATAUGA ASSOCIATION OF GENEALOGISTS MEETING -- Watauga Association of Genealogists (WAGS) will feature authors Bill Gann and Gary Toms from Independence, Missouri at the Johnson City Public Library, 100 W. Millard St., Johnson City, on Tuesday, Oct 1, at 6:30 p.m. The title of their presentation is "Writing a Family History." Bill and Gary will share some of their experiences in researching and writing their third book, a history of the Adam C. and Rosina (Broyles) Gann family from Washington, County.
