Each year the Dothan Fire Department conducts a public awareness and fundraising campaign for Childhood Cancer Awareness.
They started early in September which was Childhood Cancer Awareness Month which DFD kicked off by hosting its annual Going for the Gold 5K and Family Fun Day. Firefighters with the Dothan Fire Department say they want to raise awareness for Childhood Cancer and provide support for the families of those who are coping with it.
At 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 24, members of the Fire Department will donate the funds raised in this year's campaign.
"The community and our members really stepped up by purchasing our annual awareness t-shirts and participating in the 5K run along with the family day to raise the funds we have to donate," said Deputy Chief David Hasty.
Carmen Maddox from Childrens Hospitals of Alabama will be present to receive the donation along with Deputy Chief David Hasty, Program Coordinator and Fire Chief Larry Williams.
"Each year I am overwhelmed at the effort of our members and the community to raise funds and draw awareness to childhood cancer," said Williams.
DFD started this mission in 2014 to raise funds after two families in the department were affected, including his own, Hasty said.
Each year, they have averaged about $11,000 to $13,000 in donations. As of last year, they reached a donation total of $115,000 for 2014 to 2023. These funds come from donations, people purchasing shirts, and sponsorships. Those interested in sponsoring can still reach out to the department to help the cause.
All proceeds to Childrens Hosptials for pediatric cancer research at the Alabama Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorders in Birmingham.
