Everyone Said The Same Thing About Al Michaels on Thursday

The New York Jets hosted AFC East rivals the New England Patriots at MetLife Stadium in Week 3's edition of Thursday Night Football.

The Amazon-run TNF production features some household names in the commentator booth after the company shelled out to hire Kirk Herbstreit of ESPN "College GameDay" fame as color commentator next to broadcasting legend Al Michaels on play-by-play.

The duo is three weeks into their third year together after being announced by Amazon on March 23, 2022.

Michaels has been calling football games for five decades now, and his legendary status is highlighted by the sheer number of historic events the 79-year-old has been a part of the broadcast for. Multiple Super Bowls, MLB World Series, NHL Stanley Cup Finals and Olympic Games have been brought into viewers' homes by Al Michaels.

During the TNF matchup between the Patriots and Jets, many fans had similar feelings about Michaels' commentary - not very positive ones.

One fan remarks, "Al Michaels is so washed."

Another added "Al Michaels lost his fastball. No enthusiasm," equating his big play calls to "narrating an audiobook."

"Al Michaels can't even pretend to get excited anymore," another fan agreed:

One user recognized Michaels' lack of enthusiasm:

While another thinks they could do better, stating "The NFL could pay me 10x less and they'd get 10x more out of me than Al Michaels."

This reaction from fans is due in large part to the shared sentiment that Michaels' commentary has progressively gotten worse with the years, and it may be time for him to go out on top and retire. Common criticisms include a lack of energy and low chemistry with his co-host.

The duo of Michaels and Herbstreit is slated to be a part of the Thursday Night Football broadcast through the rest of the 2024 NFL season.

With the reaction they have gotten from fans, it remains to be seen how much longer the legendary Al Michaels will be a part of primetime football.
