Family Sunshine Center aims to break stigma around domestic violence

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) - Calls for help to escape domestic violence situations are getting louder across the United States.

The Family Sunshine Center has seen an increase of domestic violence reports come into its agency.

Executive Director Tay Knight said a recent study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that one in two women and one in four men will likely experience domestic violence in their lifetimes.

"It's way more broad than that," Knight said. "It can include physical abuse, financial abuse, emotional abuse, and so those are some of the things that our friends and family and the public don't really notice."

For Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the Family Sunshine Center is promoting a campaign to help end the stigma around survivors, titled "Words Matter."

Knight said words can either heal or further cause harm to survivors.

"For example, 'why didn't they just leave?' That implies that they are the reason for the abuse or that it's their fault," Knight said.

The agency is encouraging the public to use their words to support and empower people to get the help they need, even if that means calling the hotline to ask questions or create an exit plan.

A 24/7 crisis hotline is available to those who need help or know someone needing help by calling 334-263-0218.
