Jakarta awaits new electric bus fleet - electrive.com

The Indonesian capital Jakarta prepares to welcome an expansion of electric buses services on its road as PT Bianglala Metropolitan (PT BMP) with an order from bus manufacturer Golden Dragon. The purchase deal marks the largest single electric bus order in Indonesia to date.

Following the delivery of 22 twelve-metre low-entry electric buses last year, Golden Dragon, a Chinese automaker, has been tasked with supplying 90 twelve-metre high-floor electric buses to PT BMP, as per the contract signed this year. Subsequently, the latter plans to deploy the electric buses along BRT routes in Jakarta.

Thanks to the innovative design from Golden Dragon, the buses can withstand high temperatures, humidity, and corrosion. Moreover, the electric buses are powered by high-density batteries from CATL and boast wheel ends that help eliminate high maintenance costs.

The high-floor electric buses buses promise to contribute to the electrification of the public transport system in Indonesia. The country's road network is so vast that it can serve over 280 million residents.

In 2019, the Indonesian government implemented a strategic plan to mitigate diesel-fuel vehicle emissions and promote energy sustainability. Bus-news says that the government aims to accelerate the adoption of electric buses in public transport. By formulating policies that facilitate the procurement of electric vehicles and the development of charging infrastructure, public transport operators like PT BMP have been making strides in deploying electric buses on Jakarta's streets since 2023. As reported, the bus operator currently employs 22 electric buses on non-BRT routes. Following the success of PT BMP, Bus-news says that the government also wants Transjakarta, Jakarta's bus rapid transit (BRT) operator, to transition 10,047 buses to electric by 2030.

According to reports, Golden Dragon also offers technical training, remote and on-site assistance, parts supply, and performance monitoring to Indonesian bus operators in a bid to advance and support the influx of electric bus services in the city.
