Victor Wembanyama Calls 'Fake News' on Impossible Offseason Transformation

Victor Wembanyama can do pretty much anything on a basketball court.

There's literally never been a player like the San Antonio Spurs sensation, a 7-foot-3 big man who protects the rim like a center, moves like a wing and boasts the burgeoning ball skills of a guard.

Expectations are sky-high for Wembanyama entering 2024-25 after he followed a standout rookie season by leading underdog France to a silver medal at the Paris Olympics.

No matter how his highly anticipated sophomore season unfolds, though, don't chalk up Wembanyama's performance to any truth behind rumors of his jaw-popping summer weight gain.

Asked on Monday whether he really added 25 pounds during the offseason, Wembanyama set the record straight.

"No, no, no," he replied, translated to English from French. "Not at all. That's fake news. 10 kilograms in 12 months, that's impossible without getting injured."

You can forgive some for assuming otherwise. Not only has the 20-year-old clearly put on mass since the last April, but his listed weight with San Antonio is up from 210 pounds to 235 pounds, too.

The NBA introduced a new policy on height in 2022-23, stipulating that players must be listed at their actual height without wearing shoes and socks. There's no similar rule in place on weight, leading to dissonant official weights and casual eye tests across the league.

Maybe Wembanyama really does weigh 235 pounds now. Either way, expect him to build on a historic rookie campaign with the Spurs, cementing himself as one of the league's best players for years and years to come.
