'Playoff Patrick' rolling as West De Pere prepares for Kaukauna

DE PERE (WLUK) -- For the third year in a row West De Pere and Kaukauna are meeting in the playoffs after already facing each other during the regular season.

The last two years the teams have split their playoff matchups after meeting during the regular season. The last time these teams met was week 2 this season and West De Pere was on the verge of winning before a Phantoms receiver lost a fumble in the final minute when it looked like it was going to be a game-winning touchdown.

Friday's sectional final matchup at Kaukauna is game six over the last three seasons, as these non-conference foes are like conference rivals.

"The last three years we haven't played anyone more," West De Pere coach Chris Greisen said. "They're really well coached, they're a good team, athletic, strong, big. So they've gotten us three times, we've gotten them twice and now you know, let's see if we can even the score a little bit."

The Phantoms have the offense to even the score. Quarterback Patrick Greisen has been on fire all season and leads the state with 45 touchdown passes and 3,187 yards, but he is quick to point out he isn't a one-man show.

"I just developed as a quarterback and my line gives me time and my receivers make unbelievable catches, so coming into this week it's the same thing, we just have to execute," he said.

Greisen's 45 touchdown passes are 10 more than the second-place quarterback has and the 45 TDs are tied for third most in state history in a single season. His coach and father says his son has been playing some unbelievable football.

"Patrick has been unbelievable in his processing, his reads and his throws," Chris Greisen said. "The catches by some of our receivers have been unbelievable. You got a whole season worth of experience now but running this offense, seeing it, being able to anticipate, processing the information.

"I say this humbly because I'm his dad, but he's playing the best I've seen out of any quarterback in high school football."

In two playoff games, Greisen has more than 1,000 passing yards and 13 touchdown passes, including eight against Oshkosh North. You could call him "Playoff Patrick" for this run, but one thing for sure Greisen is not keeping count.

"No, I just try to keep my head on winning the game," Patrick Greisen said. "I don't care about my stats, really. That game I had no idea that I had that much at the end of the game, I was just focused on winning the game."

Having the ball in Greisen's right hand seems to be a good strategy.

2 Straight 500-yard passing games for Greisen

3 Touchdown passes is the fewest Greisen has thrown in a game this season

10 Wins by West De Pere when it scores more than 31 points (only loss came to Kaukauna 35-31)

64 Receptions this season for Brock Story (No. 5 in the state)
