LA CROSSE, Wis. - (WXOW) - The Federal Trade Commission said phone scams continue to try and fleece people out of as much money possible.
In the Coulee Region the latest wave of phone scammers have been posing as Sheriff's officers. They tell someone they have missed jury duty and as a result they now have an active arrest warrant. The caller then says a bond can be purchased in cash by meeting at a designated location to pay.
According to the La Crosse Sheriff's Department, that is not how things work. It is a scam that you should report immediately.
"You should always report it," said Lt. John Williams. "We will have an officer come out and take a report on it so it's documented and there will be follow-up."
Williams added that you should know the red flags of scammer phone calls.
"It's usually an outlandish claim like they've got a relative in jail in Mexico...or someone is requesting the money over the phone, in cash or through gift cards," Williams said.
