Once the third largest mall in the nation, Century III will be completely demolished within months.

On Thursday, state leaders announced what's next. Lt. Governor Austin Davis, a Mon Valley native, shared that the shuttered mall would be demolished and prepped for redevelopment.

"With the demolition of the old mall, we're reinventing this site once again and transforming an eyesore into a sustainable economic generator, not just West Mifflin, but all of southwestern Pennsylvania," said Davis.

When it opened in 1979, Century III was an economic hub that sat on nearly 89 acres of land.

"Vacant suburban malls are an issue that we're facing across America, it is a national challenge. Since the mall's closure in 2019 the site has become a growing health and safety concern for our community," said County Executive, Sars Innamorato.

The County Executive and the Lt. Governor reassured community members that what sounds like an ending, is the beginning of a new chapter for the region investing 1 million dollars into the demolition.

"This $1 million grant will help retain five local construction jobs and create 150 new positions, and future mixed-use development," Davis explained.

So, what's next for this land?

This site is going to be prepped for mixed-use redevelopment, bringing a mix of commercial spaces, residents, and public amenities to really meet the community's needs," Innamorato, said.

Developers have envisioned restaurants, office spaces, shopping, and potentially some industrial job creators, keeping all their options on the table.

"We are looking for something that will become a live-work-play type of environment," Shawl Pryor, the COO of Moonbeam Capital Investments Group.

Local officials are urging everyone in the area to remember that this is an active construction site, and is not safe for people to visit.
