ANCHOR update: Tool to check the status of your benefit is down

New Jersey residents eager to get their 2021 ANCHOR benefit will have to wait to get updates on their applications.

The tool that allows residents to check the status of their benefits is down until Oct. 23, the state's website said.

"The ANCHOR Inquiry System is currently unavailable due to maintenance," the website said.

The Treasury Department didn't immediately respond to requests for more information about why the system was down or when it was first taken offline.

About a million New Jersey residents have received their ANCHOR benefits already, state officials said earlier this week.

Direct deposits were sent to more than 900,000 residents and should have hit bank accounts on Thursday, Oct. 10. Also, about 100,000 checks were mailed to residents on Friday, Oct. 11, the agency said.

The first round of payments went mostly to people whose applications were filed automatically by the state, and new rounds will be paid each week.

When the status tool was up and running, people could look up their benefits for the current benefit year, which is for 2021, and also see the status of their 2020 and 2019 benefits.

Residents would start at the state's ANCHOR info page at nj.gov/treasury/taxation/anchor. Then they'd "Check Benefit Status," and enter their Social Security number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) and their zip code.

The system would then say whether an application is processing, whether the state had no record of an application or that it has paid out the benefit, and when.
