Medina drivers: Keep an eye out for deer on city streets

MEDINA, Ohio -- With fall now in full swing, Service Director Nino Piccoli reminds motorists to be on the lookout for deer while driving around the city.

During a recent City Council meeting, Piccoli said that two weeks before, the number of deceased deer the service department had picked up so far this year was 84.

"Just two weeks later, that number has increased to 91. So that is seven more in just two weeks' time," Piccoli said.

"We are going into rutting season, so we are probably on pace to collect another 30 before the end of the year.

"Please just be careful, as they are moving everywhere."

Police Chief Ed Kinney also reminded the public that the Medina Police Department is still collecting applications for its municipal deer hunting program.

He said bowhunting season will begin Saturday (Sept. 28) and run through Feb. 2.

"I do want to remind the public that you must come to the police department to submit an application and receive a permit to legally be allowed to hunt," he said.

"If you are hunting without a permit, then you are not legally hunting."

In other news, the city is excited to announce that Medina will be featured on the PBS show City Centric.

The episode featuring Medina will premier at 8:30 p.m. Friday (Sept. 27) on PBS Western Reserve.

The episode will be rebroadcast at later dates, so anyone interested in watching can check their TV listings or get more information at pbswesternreserve.org.
