Wheel Bugs in Texas: Friend or Foe? Everything You Need to Know

Texas has no shortage of bugs. Many look creepy but are harmless like Wolf Spiders but some look harmless and can pack a punch like a Wheel Bug.

A Wheel Bug or by its scientific name Arilus cristatus is a large brown or grey insect with a semi-circular crest on their back that looks like a cog wheel, hence its name. They also have long dark antennas and dark wings.

This creepy crawlies are called predator bugs, which is why they are also known as 'assassin bugs'.

The Wheel Bug is known to live in the southern parts of the United States and has definitely made Texas one of its homes.

Wheel Bugs tend to be very shy and try to avoid humans at all costs but if threatened can bite. The bite is known to be a painful one and can feel worse than a sting from a wasp or hornet. The pain can last for a few minutes and shouldn't need medical attention unless you have an allergic reaction to the sting.

Even though Wheel Bugs can have a painful bite, they are considered beneficial. The Wheel Bug feeds on pests that can destroy gardens and natural habitats.

Do not panic!

A Wheel Bug will do its best to avoid you but if you see one up close just simply walk away.

If you happen to have one on you, do not smash it or swat at it. This can make the bug bite you and it will not be so pleasant. Try to get a piece of paper or something to gently scoop the insect off you and place it on the nearest plant.

Wheel Bugs will keep gardens and plants safe from insect pests.
