5A Great Basin Conference tournament
No. 1 Twin Falls 3, No. 4 Minico 1 (25-22, 23-25, 25-23, 25-21)
It wasn't the Lady Bruins best effort, but they were still able to grind out a win and advance.
"The energy tonight was lower than it usually is," Twin Falls senior Molly Hodge told the Times-News. "And I think that we had to work with a lot of new people on our lineup and we had to learn how to work with them."
Twin Falls (14-15 overall) will host No. 2 Wood River at 6 p.m. Tuesday, with the winner qualifying for the 5A state tournament and hosting the conference championship on Thursday.
Minico (10-14-1 overall) will visit No. 3 Burley Tuesday for a loser-out game. Match time has yet to be announced.
Minico answered every time Twin Falls readied to take control of the match. The Spartans refused to go down easy, but the Lady Bruins also played a deeper bench than usual. Hawkins played some junior varsity call-ups and told the Times-News her team is working through some things while the whole goal is "growth every day," but declined to be more specific.
But when the sets were on the line, Twin Falls relied on its usual group of hitters to get past Minico. The Spartans never found an answer for senior middle hitter Ava Martin, and the Lady Bruins also got steady contributions from seniors Rylee Hansen, Hodge, Skylar Westburg and junior Millie Western.
"We're lucky to have a bunch of really good athletes," Hawkins told the Times-News.
Twin Falls led 19-12 in the first set, but Minico cut the lead to one twice before a Martin ace just dropped over the net to close it out. The Lady Bruins led 15-10 in the second set before Minico went on a 9-1 run and went on to win the set to tie the match. Twin Falls opened up a 22-17 lead in the third set, and Minico wouldn't go away again before a Hodge ace closed it out. The Boise State softball commit also closed out the match with a kill in the fourth set.
Survive and advance is all that matters this time of year, but the Lady Bruins know they need to be better Tuesday with a state tournament berth on the line.
"Tomorrow we're going to have to come out and play with high energy to beat Wood River," Hodge said.
No. 2 Wood River 3, No. 3 Burley 1 (25-23, 17-25, 25-17, 25-15)
Ellie Sandoz had 21 kills and Marlee McLean had 59 assists to lead the Wolverines. Lada Smetanina and Cynthia Reyes had nine kills, and Smetanina also had five aces. Ashley Carhuamaca had 14 digs.
Wood River (20-13 overall) will visit No. 1 Twin Falls at 6 p.m. Tuesday, with the winner qualifying for the 5A state tournament and hosting the conference championship on Thursday.
Burley (14-19-1 overall) will host No. 4 Minico Tuesday in a loser-out game. Match time has yet to be announced.
