Seventy years ago on this date, the first successful kidney transplant was performed by J. Hartwell Harrison and Joseph Murray at Brigham & Women's Hospital in Boston.

5 other transplant firsts:

1) 1966: The first successful pancreas transplant was performed by Richard Lillihei and William Kelly in Minnesota.

2) 1967: The first successful liver transplant was performed by Thomas Starzl, known as the 'father of modern transplantation.'

3) 1967: First human-to-human heart transplant. The heart of accident victim Denise Darvall was transplanted into 54-year-old Louis Washkansky, in Cape Town, South Africa.

4) 2005: First successful ovarian transplant, P. N. Mhatre (Wadia Hospital, Mumbai, India)

5) 2010: First full facial transplant, Joan Pere Barret and team (Hospital Universitari Vall d'Hebron in Barcelona, Spain)
