Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann Was Diagnosed With Leptospirosis; How Dangerous Is The Disease?

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann was recently diagnosed with the leptospirosis infection. The AAP leader was reportedly given antibiotics and discharged on Sunday four days after being admitted Mohali's Fortis hospital. Here's all you need to know about the disease.

Leptospirosis, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), is caused by the bacterium Leptospira. It affects animals and people when they come in contact with contaminated water or soil.

About one million cases in people occur around the world each year, with nearly 60,000 deaths, says the CDC.

Sign, symptoms and treatment

The symptoms of Leptospirosis are fever, headache, chill, body or muscle aches, vomiting or nausea, jaundice, red eyes, stomach pain, diarrhea and rash. Some patients do not show any symptoms.

The amount of time it takes for people to get sick varies from two days to a month. CDC says the illness may occur in two phases. In the first, the patient may have fever, chills, headache and diarrhea. The second phase is more severe as it can cause kidney or liver failure or inflammation of the membrane around the brain and spinal cord.

A patient may be sick for a few days to several weeks. Without treatment, it could take several months to get better.

It can be treated with antibiotics, such as doxycycline or penicillin if they are given as early as possible. Intravenous (IV) antibiotics is administered to patients with severe cases.
