Rock legend says he'll retire at 70 'if I make it that far'

The 65-year-old musician told The Times that he plans to retire in five years.

Smith said The Cure will tour next year in support of the band's upcoming album "Songs of a Lost World," which will be released on Friday, Nov. 1.

Smith plans on playing shows until 2028, which will mark The Cure's 50th anniversary. After that, he's done.

"I'm 70 in 2029," he said. "And that's it, that really is it. If I make it that far, that's it."

While the band's original members met in 1976 and formed Easy Cure, The Cure was not formed until 1978 when "Easy" was dropped from the group's name, according to The Cure's website. Their debut album "Three Imaginary Boys" was released in May 1979.

The Cure has gone on to release 13 studio albums, top the UK Albums Chart and sell over 30 million albums worldwide. The Cure was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2019.

Looking back at his decades-long career, Smith told The Times that he has "led a very privileged life."

"I can't believe how lucky I've been. I'm still doing what I always wanted but the fact I'm still upright is probably the best thing about being me because there have been points where I didn't think I would hit 30, 40, 50," he said. "My mind doesn't function with the same acuity it once had, but I'm much more relaxed and easier to get on with."
