WESTMINSTER, Colo. (KDVR) -- A Westminster man is fighting for his life at the hospital after a brutal assault Sunday evening.
Jonny George was just wrapping up a day of celebrating his and his wife Erika Halte's 5th anniversary when he decided to run a quick errand and walk to a nearby gas station. Halte began to worry when hours went by and Jonny still wasn't home.
She tried calling, but his phone seemed to be off. She figured he had decided to walk to his parents who also live close by.
When she woke up the next morning, her concerns grew when she got a call from Saint Anthony's Hospital in Lakewood.
"I got contact from the hospital around 9:30 the next morning and that's when they informed me what happened and that a bystander had called in an incident and then we was picked up and then transported by ambulance to St. Anthony's North where he underwent some testing and they found out that he had some severe bleeding in the brain," Halte said.
Jonny had been assaulted from behind, somewhere along 120th Avenue, near Interstate 25. He did call the police. The Westminster Police Department told FOX31 the agency received a call about a disturbance around 7:19 p.m., but the caller did not want officer contact or to make a report.
"He was asking for help because there was a group of people that were starting stuff with him and they asked him if he wanted any assistance, he said no he was on his way back home and he wasn't far and so he declined for them to come out," Halte said.
The call to police that came later was after Jonny was attacked and found unresponsive. This case is now under investigation, and Westminster police said it has no suspects at this time.
"I think it was just some random people, I'm not really sure. I'm hoping that because of the time of day and that it was out in public, that some people saw it and maybe they will come forward. That's my reason for speaking to the news, is I want some answers, he deserves to know what happened," Halte said.
Jonny is the sole provider for his wife and children. Unfortunately, Jonny has no insurance, so things are quickly piling up. There is a fundraiser set up to help, you can find a link to that fundraiser here.
"I don't even know what to do. I'm speechless. My heart is broken that people are so cruel as to hurt someone and just leave them. We have a three-and-a-half-year-old son and so I'm having to leave my husband every day to go and care for our son and it's killing me," Halte said. "My son's now asking for his father and you know what do you tell a three and half year old? What do they comprehend at that age?"
