Multiple Erie County voters have been experiencing errors with their mail-in ballots, with some receiving more than one ballot.
The problem comes from Election IQ, a ballot printing company that sent 296 people an incorrect ballot in addition to the correct one.
"Election IQ is a mail house, it's a printing company out of Akron, Ohio. We contracted with them in March of 2023. This will be our fourth election using them. We haven't had any really known issues in the past with them," said Erie County Clerk Karen Chillcott.
According to the Board of Election's chairman, Election IQ's addressing system temporarily failed, which led to ballots being mailed to the wrong places.
Despite Election IQ's shortcomings with mail-in ballots, the crew here at the Erie County Board of Elections have been working tirelessly to secure the voting process.
"We're very confident in the security of this election, and we always have maintained integrity in the elections here in Erie County," said Chillcott. "For those issues where there were duplicate ballots, we have a lot of procedures internally in place so that we can review those manually."
Workers at the Erie County Elections Office have also been receiving hundreds of phone calls from concerned voters, mostly people who haven't received their ballots.
"Our staff here is working with a lot of volume at this time of year, so those number of calls have really added to the amount of work that we've been doing here, but we really want to be taking the time to answer those questions and handle those phone calls," said Chillcott.
But the county clerk said those ballots are likely to come in sometime this week, and if not, ballots can be reissued at the elections office in the Erie County Courthouse.
The Erie County Board of Elections is working to make sure those 296 voters don't vote twice, and they will prosecute anyone who attempts to submit more than one ballot.
