'The Batman' Rumor Suggests James Gunn & Matt Reeves Are At Odds Over Robert Pattinson's DC Universe Role

Is there Bat Blood in the DC Universe? According to a new rumor, James Gunn and Matt Reeves are reportedly at odds over Robert Pattinson's role as Batman.

One of the first questions on anyone's mind when James Gunn announced that the DC Universe would be getting a reboot on the silver screen was who would be playing Batman. While the rumor mill flowed with names from Jensen Ackles to Jon Hamm, all eyes turned to Robert Pattinson, who had just come off an enormously successful take on the character with Matt Reeves' The Batman.

Fans seemingly weren't the only ones to consider this. According to veteran entertainment reporter Jeff Sneider on The Hot Mic, James Gunn did in fact want Robert Pattinson as the Batman of the DC Universe. However, Matt Reeves is reportedly "resistant" to the idea. The scooper also made it clear that this conflict had nothing to do with delays on The Batman's sequel, with that being ascribed to a "personal thing."

Will Robert Pattinson Be The Batman In The DC Universe?

While this rumor is interesting, it likely isn't true. At least, not in the way it's being presented. James Gunn actually spoke recently saying that he did consider bringing Robert Pattinson into the DC Universe. While he didn't reveal why he ultimately decided not to pursue that route, he did state that he is committed to telling Elseworlds stories with DC Studios, suggesting that it was likely in pursuit of giving Matt Reeves creative freedom with The Batman.

The rumor also doesn't line up with what fans know about both Matt Reeves' take on the character and James Gunn's plans for the DC Universe. Batman: The Brave and The Bold is set to focus on a version of Bruce Wayne who's old enough to have a 10-year-old son and multiple Robins before that. While not entirely impossible for Robert Pattinson's take on the character, it would likely be too far of a stretch to sustain in the long run.
