Derbyshire tips to reduce opening hours

Household waste recycling centres in Derbyshire will soon be open for reduced hours as part of cost-cutting measures.

The county council needs to overcome an estimated budget deficit of about £40m for the 2024/25 financial year.

From 1 October, eight of the council's nine tips will be open for two hours less each day.

It means they will open at 09:30 BST instead of 08:30, and close at 17:00 instead of 18:00.

The council's household waste centres are in Ashbourne, Bolsover, Bretby, Chesterfield, Glossop, Ilkeston, Loscoe, Northwood and Waterswallows.

The opening hours will remain the same at Waterswallows due to different contractual arrangements.

The changes were previously agreed by councillors at a cabinet meeting.

Charges for tyre and asbestos disposal have already been introduced and there will also be a trial for small businesses to use two sites.

Carolyn Renwick, cabinet member for infrastructure and environment, said the changes will save the council £500,000.
