Sheriff seeking felony charges for juvenile after shooting threat hoax at Lake Norman High

A juvenile is expected to face felony charges for creating a hoax and claiming another juvenile was planning a school shooting at Lake Norman High School, according to the Iredell County Sheriff's Office.

On Sunday, the sheriff's office found out about of a screenshot circulating that referenced a threat of mass violence at Lake Norman High School, the sheriff's office said in a news release. The information was received after multiple other investigations into a social media post about school shootings nationwide, the sheriff's office said.

During the investigation, detectives with the sheriff's office and school resource officers, determined that a juvenile falsely created a document implicating another juvenile in a plan to commit a shooting at the school, the release said. The document was shared among students at multiple schools within the county.

"The Iredell County Sheriff's Office takes all threats of mass violence seriously, conducting a thorough investigation into every allegation and pursuing appropriate charges when necessary," Sheriff Darren Campbell said in the press release. "This school year alone, there have been 25 reports concerning mass violence, 11 of which have resulted in felony charges. Parents, please take this opportunity to talk to your students about the serious consequences of their actions."
