KEWANEE, ILL. - North Scott captured the 2024 MAC Championship, edging out Pleasant Valley, 601-609, at Kewanee Dunes Golf Course on Saturday morning.

Behind medalist Luke Leverenz's two-day total of 147, the Lancers posted a stellar 299 on Friday before closing out the two-day tournament with a 302 for an eight-stroke victory.

"My boys played pretty well," North Scott head coach Mike Wuertz said. "It was good to see them play well, especially after we had the lead on Day 1."

North Scott senior Jack Gomez finished in a four-way tie for second at 150 but won the tiebreaker. North Scott freshman Andrew Vollbeer, and Pleasant Valley's Ben Livingston and Ethan Bloome also ended with 150s.

"Beating a program like Pleasant Valley, that is always very tough to do, so it was pretty exciting to get the win," Wuertz said.

Leverenz had the top individual score of 74 over the two days. He shot a 76 on Saturday.

"It was nice to finally get a win," Leverenz said. "I have been really close before, but I have been playing pretty decent golf for this win."

Leverenz said he had trouble on the 17th hole on Friday, but stayed away from big numbers on Day 2.

"On the first day of the tournament, I made a triple, which obviously is not the best, but I was able to recover from all of my bad holes (on Saturday)," Leverenz said. "I think I was three over through the first four holes, but I ended up shooting two over. So, it was always good that I was able to stay in it."

Wuertz was proud of his freshman's performance.

"Luke played awesome," Wuertz said. "He had a one-stroke lead going in, and today, to be able to back up his 74 in these conditions, on this hard course, was really impressive."

Remnants of Hurricane Helene resulted in windier-than-normal conditions on both days of the meet.

"The wind was definitely a big factor, especially on Friday. Tt was cold, and the wind was stronger at times, and the wind continued to be strong when we started play on Saturday," Wuertz said. "Our golfers are always having to make adjustments. It was good to see them able to do that."

Leverenz did not think the blustery conditions, along with the course layout, impacted his play dramatically during the tournament.

"I have played in windier weather than what I experienced here. I was pretty accustomed to the weather," Leverenz said. "The greens were not too fast and were not too slow. They were pretty average to what I was expecting."

Next up for North Scott is a meet with Davenport North, Central DeWitt and Clinton at Glynns Creek Golf Course on Tuesday.

Bettendorf ended in third place, after team totals of 317 and 311, culminating for a 628. Central DeWitt (638) was fifth.
