Bailey Zappe's Chiefs tenure proved to be very brief.
Cleveland is set to sign Zappe off of Kansas City's practice squad, according to a report Tuesday from NFL Network's Tom Pelissero. The Browns on Sunday lost Deshaun Watson to a season-ending Achilles injury and backup Dorian Thompson-Robinson damaged his finger late in the loss to the Cincinnati Bengals. Thus, there seemingly is a chance Zappe could back up Jameis Winston in Cleveland's clash with the Baltimore Ravens this Sunday.
Zappe signed onto the Chiefs practice squad two days after he was waived by the Patriots in late August. New England, which took Zappe in the fourth round of the 2022 draft, opted to roll with rookie Joe Milton III instead of the 25-year-old as its third quarterback on the depth chart. The Western Kentucky product started eight games over two seasons with the Patriots, logging a 4-4 record while throwing for 2,053 yards with 11 touchdown passes and 12 interceptions.
With Zappe now out of the picture in Kansas City, the two-time defending Super Bowl champions are down to two players in their quarterback room. Carson Wentz will continue to back up all-world signal-caller Patrick Mahomes, but Andy Reid and company might now be on the lookout for a signal-caller to add to the practice squad.
