Red Sox starter's poor outing leads to 9-4 loss to Blue Jays

The Boston Red Sox welcomed the Toronto Blue Jays to Fenway Park for the second of three games on Tuesday night, and they were promptly handed a 9-4 loss.

Boston's starting pitcher Brayan Bello had a tough night, allowing seven earned runs on five hits and three walks over 2 1/3 inning. All seven runs came in the third inning right after the Red Sox took a two-run lead due to a Rafael Devers solo home run and a Masataka Yoshida RBI double that scored Tyler O'Neill.

Greg Weissert finished out the third inning for Bello without allowing a hit, and Josh Winckowski, who was recently recalled from Triple-A Worcester, came in for the remaining 6 2/3 innings to save the bullpen. He gave up just two runs on six hits and a walk while striking out eight.

Alex Cora's offense was lacking in the loss as well. Beyond the two runs early, their only other runs came in the sixth inning when O'Neill hit a two-run home run after Devers got aboard due to fan interference on a ball crushed to deep center field. As a team, Boston managed just five hits and three walks.

This loss drops the Red Sox to 43-47 overall and 19-21 at Fenway Park. The two teams will meet again on Wednesday for the series finale, and the winner will take the three-game set.
