Victim of fatal hit-and-run hit twice, police search for first driver

ST. LOUIS - St. Louis Metropolitan Police are investigating a deadly hit-and-run near Fairground Park in north St. Louis Monday.

Officers say a driver struck a man in the middle of the street and took off. Around 1 a.m., they received a call about a man dancing in the middle of the street. He refused any medical treatment, according to police.

"You can't force somebody to the hospital. So unfortunately, about 45 minutes later, we end up getting a call about a man who had been hit and killed in the road," Mitch McCoy with SLMPD said.

According to McCoy, witnesses saw a second car hit the pedestrian.

"The second vehicle that hit the pedestrian stayed at the scene. Our accident reconstructive investigators are now working to figure out who hit him, that first vehicle, and we are still trying to piece everything together," McCoy said.

This is the second deadly hit-and-run in our area recently. Florissant Police arrested Alonzo Johnson for leaving the scene of an accident that resulted in death.

Surveillance video showed the victim, later identified as Rick Alsept, and his dog struck and killed while out walking Saturday morning. It happened on Waterford Drive between St. Catherine and St. Anthony. Johnson is being held on a $50,000 bond.

Police are asking for the public's help to identify the driver in Monday's deadly incident. You can also call CrimeStoppers at 1-866-371-TIPS, where you can always remain anonymous.
