'American Sports Story' explores rise and fall of former Patriots player Aaron Hernandez

Nearly a decade after former New England Patriots tight end, Aaron Hernandez was convicted of the murder of "Odin Lloyd," an FX's limited series will premiere on Tuesday, September 17 and will delve into the NFL superstar's life and death and their legacy in sports and American culture.

The series will premiere the first two episodes at 10 p.m. ET on FX. Those without cable can watch the show for free through FuboTV or DirecTV Stream, each offering a free trial to new users. Sling is another option for streaming the show, and promotional offers are available. Viewers can also stream on Hulu the next day.

The first installment of FX's "American Sports Story" is based on the podcast Gladiator: Aaron Hernandez and Football Inc. from The Boston Globe and Wondery.

The 10-episode limited series charts the rise and fall of NFL superstar Aaron Hernandez and explores the disparate strands of his identity, his family, his career, his suicide and their legacy in sports and American culture, according to FX.

The former New England Patriots tight end was convicted of murdering semi-professional football player, Odin L. Lloyd in 2015. Lloyd was the boyfriend of Hernandez's fiancée's sister.

Days after being acquitted in a second trial on charges of shooting two men in a car near a Boston nightclub, Hernandez died by suicide inside a Massachusetts maximum security prison in 2017.

"American Sports Story: Aaron Hernandez" is executive produced by Ryan Murphy, Stuart Zicherman, Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson, Alexis Martin Woodall, Eric Kovtun, Scott Robertson and Carl Franklin.
