Man arrested after his wife, mother-in-law fatally shot, Garland police say

Brodrick Kennedy, 35, faces charges of capital murder of multiple persons and violation of a protective order.

Two women were shot and killed at a Garland apartment complex Tuesday morning and a man is facing a capital murder charge in their deaths, police said.

Officers responded shortly after 8 a.m. to an apartment complex in the 700 block of Broadway Commons on a report of a domestic disturbance, according to a Garland police news release. Upon their arrival, officers noticed the front door of the residence had been forcibly opened, police said.

Officers looked inside and located two small children. As police entered the apartment, gunfire erupted from behind a closed bedroom door as officers took cover and began issuing commands, police said.

While officers were working to secure the children, Brodrick Earl Kennedy, 35, exited the bedroom and surrendered to police, authorities said. Inside the bedroom, police found two women suffering from gunshot wounds.

One woman, identified by police as Donillie Lashay Kennedy, 38, was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other women, identified as Shirley Jean Phillips, 58, was taken to a hospital where she died from her wounds.

Police said Donillie Kennedy was the wife of Brodrick Kennedy, while Phillips was identified as Donillie Kennedy's mother.

Garland police said the department is investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting, and said the two children have since been safely released to extended family members.

Brodrick Kennedy was booked into the Garland Detention Center and faces charges of capital murder of multiple persons and violation of a protective order, an official at the detention center said. His bond had not been set as pf Tuesday afternoon.

It was not immediately clear if he had retained an attorney.
