September has, so far, been the third driest in state history, with some parts of New Jersey receiving less than a tenth of an inch, State Climatologist David Robinson said.

Looking at the 120 or so volunteer monitoring stations, Robinson said rainfall throughout the Garden State varies from less than a tenth of inch in southern portions to just over an inch up north. The statewide average is less than a half an inch.

If little or no rain falls in next nine days, it will be third driest September since record keeping began 130 years ago, he said.

In 1941, the driest on record, less than a third of an inch was recorded. In 1914, .38 inches were recorded. Third place currently belongs to 2007, when .99 inches were recorded, State Office of Climatology records show,.

It has meant a quick drawdown for a number of the state's reservoirs, although they by and large remain above seasonal average, Robinson said. The reason for that, he added, is that the reservoirs were at full capacity going into late spring and summer.

"We had a head start," Robinson said. "We'll have to keep an eye on them.

No drought watches or warnings are being discussed. The last big rainfall was six weeks ago in early August, he said.

The dearth of rainfall has lead to lower stream flows and dry soil. One potential concern is forest fires. The have been three since July, burning thousands of acres.

The National Weather Service said there is a chance to add to September's rainfall on Wednesday, Sept. 25, or Thursday, Sept. 26, when showers are expected. But the rainfall may not be significant. There is also a system forming in the Gulf of Mexico, which if it comes up the coast could provide more rain.
